The SAA has brown trout fishing on more than twelve lochs, 4 of which have boats, and all are located within 10 miles of Stornoway. Some of the lochs hold fish that are 3 to the 1lb size, others have trout that average 12oz and some over 2lb.
SAA memberships are available to all local anglers and cost £35 (Adults), £25 (Concession) or £5 (Junior). Visiting anglers may purchase an Associate membership (£30). SAA members have free access to the clubs competitions and free use of the trout loch boats. Non SAA members may obtain permits to use the boats (£20/boat/day) though it is usually more cost effective to take out an SAA membership. SAA memberships are available from Sportsworld, Stornoway where boat bookings can also be made.
The trout loch boats are almost always available during the week but may be heavily used on Saturdays during the peak of the season. The season opens on the 15th March and closes on 6th October. The best months are May, June and July though the bait fisher and persistent fly fisherman will catch trout throughout the season. Although stocks are often prolific, anglers are asked to take only what they need for their own consumption and to carefully return the rest.
The SAA also has excellent trout fishing on Loch Langavat courtesy of the Uig and Hamnavay Estate who have made their fishing available to the SAA. This fishing is from the boats only and does not cover any bank fishing. The trout fishing can be excellent in May and June with catches of 100 trout not uncommon. Details, conditions and prices are provided on the Langavat fishing page.
